Best synology for plex5/27/2023 I didnt mention MiniDLNA, just DLNA which is likely a service already present on your device, it does not transcode, but you may not need it to, hence why I asked. Even if the source video is already H.264, ARM cpu's use a virtual FPU emulator which does not work for the libraries required to transcode properly. Most Synology NAS models lack the CPU power to transcode video into H.264 in realtime. ( Serviio also has a Synology/ARM dedicated build as well, and is java based. I've known 2 people to burn out their systems from using Plex for transcoding and trying to use multiple streams simultaneously. This has been a documented issue for years. The transcoder will eat all available cpu power it can. Plex's transcoder stack is known to run CPU loads over 80% for a single stream on current x86/64 cpu's. it does not handle math co-processing at all, which is used for transcoding. The arm CPU handles direct network traffic easily. Pick a fixed bitrate somewhere in the 4-7mbps range and save your dvds in native resolution, which is 720x480. I -highly- suggest you get away from transcoding if at all possible.
